Serving Kerr County with a Conscience

Petition

A petition was filed at Headwaters Groundwater Conservation District on Friday, June 24th, 2011. The petition appealed the Trinity Aquifers average drawdown of 30 ft. supported by the HGCD.  The actual projected drop in water level in Kerr county would be 39 ft. over the next 50 years according to the Texas Water Development Board.  A 39 ft. drop in aquifer level translates into using all the recharge which comes into the Trinitys plus another 39 ft before 2060.  Many consumers feel this 39 ft. projected depletion of the Trinity Aquifers is ill advised.  The petition is specific to these concerns.

This petition has evolved from legislation creating Ground Water Management Areas (GMA) across the state.  Our designated GMA 9 consists of Kerr, Bandera, Kendall, Medina, Bexar, Blanco, Comal, Hays and Travis counties. http://www.twdb.state.tx.us/GwRD/GMA/gma9/gma9home.htm.  A year ago HGCD joined other representatives of these boards and voted on desired future conditions (DFC) of 30 ft. depletion.  There were other options on the table including 0 and 4 ft. drawdown.

The petition in Kerr county joins Hays, Bandera, and Northern Bexar well owners in appealing the general 30 ft. decrease for the Trinity aquifers water level.  The HGCD can now act upon the petition or forward it to the Texas Water Development  Board for review.
